Claressa Shields has one goal and one goal only in the upcoming year. By any means necessary, she is looking to become the undisputed middleweight champion. In order to achieve this goal, Shields will vacate her WBC, WBA and IBF junior middleweight titles.
Shields will begin her journey at middleweight against Ema Kozin on January 29. Kozin currently holds the WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight belts.
If Shields overcomes Kozin, she will set herself up for an undisputed title fight against WBO Middleweight Champion Savannah Marshall.
“It will hurt a lot of people’s feelings when I beat her because they will see that she doesn’t hold any power, she doesn’t have more skill than me,” Shields told Sky Sports about a potential matchup with Marshall.
Marshall last fought in October, but it is unclear when she will re-enter the ring in 2022. Alongside potential fights with Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor and Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner, Shields-Marshall could cap what should be an incredible year in women’s boxing.
