Tragedy has struck Travis Scott’s third-annual Astroworld Music Festival.
Houston Fire Department Chief Sam Pena has confirmed that at least eight people died during the first day of the festival. A cause of death has not been determined for any of the eight victims. Furthermore, the Houston Police Department has not revealed the names of the eight victims.
During a brief press conference, Pena stated that approximately 50,000 people attended the popular Houston based event. Of those 50,000 attendees, Pena says approximately 300 people were treated at a field hospital near NRG Park and at least 17 people were transported to the hospital. Pena added that at least 11 of the people who were transported to the hospital had entered cardiac arrest. Harris County Judge Lina Hildago also stepped in to note that the people transported to the hospital were as young as 10 years old.
Shortly after Pena and Hildago finished speaking, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner confirmed that Astroworld will not return on Saturday. Instead, the city’s police department will begin investigating what took place and determine if anyone will be held criminally liable. Finner also noted that the Houston Police Department is working with Live Nation to obtain footage that was taken throughout the day to get a better idea of how this tragic situation unfolded.
More details will be added to this report as this story unfolds. With that said, the entire Def Pen staff sends its prayers and well wishes to those who have been impacted by this tragic event.
