The Boston Celtics got a big win in free agency when they signed center Al Horford this past summer. And they may not be done adding pieces to their puzzle just yet.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical on his podcast, the Celtics are eyeing a Butler reunion between head coach Brad Stevens and Jazz forward Gordon Hayward. (Transcription via WEEI)
“Danny [Ainge] has wanted to strike and, like everybody else, get that big star, get that big player. [Al] Horford was a big play and a great get in free agency. They can still keep their eye on Gordon Hayward from Utah who’s an unrestricted free agent this summer who played for Brad Stevens at Butler. I think there’s still strong hope in Utah that he’ll want to stay there.”
This shouldn’t be surprising. Hayward is having an incredible year (when healthy) and will be one of the best free agents on the market this summer. The Celtics have the advantage of a coach who knows Hayward from his college days.
That said, Boston rumors are always to be taken with a grain of salt. There has been so much speculation about who the Celtics will sign or trade for that has ultimately been wrong.
Gordon Hayward can stay in Utah for a ton of money as the Jazz build up a deep and talented team around him. That still seems like the most likely scenario.
