As we all know the Boston Celtics are swollen with Draft picks, eight to be exact. Now they already have a roster as it is and a good one at that, they don’t really need the 3rd overall pick as much as the teams around them. The C’s fans know that, it’s why they want to use it as a trade piece.
Recently we’ve heard reignited talks about Jimmy Butler, somebody that the Celtics are highly interested in. But there’s a strategy that we haven’t heard Boston talk about yet. Draft-And-Stash. Where you Draft an international player and he continues to play where ever he is. A notable example is Dario Saric who has been on the Philadelphia 76ers’ books for years.
Trading seems like the most likely option but the Celtics aren’t leaving Draft-And-Stash out.
“If we really like the guy, no, that wouldn’t be a deal-breaker,” Ainge added. “[Draft-and-stash talks] will be finalized kind of after you draft a kid, sit down and determine a plan of action, but those discussions go on all the time, year-round, contract situations, age, different levels of maturity and in the players’ game, all those come into play. But it’s a partnership with the player, his representatives and the team to try to make the best decisions for him.”
Now this could be Celtics fans worst nightmare, especially if they’re all wanting to trade most of their picks. Draft-And-Stash is the complete opposite. Not only are they drafting somebody, but they won’t see him for the next few years.
It’s an option, but the Celtics probably won’t do it for their 3rd pick. For the later picks it’s more likely.
