Director Cathy Yan has been given the reigns of the upcoming Birds of Prey film set to star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. The film, which will be based on the comic of the same name, will be produced by Sue Kroll of her Kroll & Co Entertainment and Bryan Unkeless of Clubhouse Pictures.
Cathy Yan is a former Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal reporter who made her film debut at Sundance with a film called Dead Pigs. The film originated from a story about more than 16,000 dead pigs found floating in the Jiapingtang River that caught Yan’s interest when she returned home to China a few years ago. The film features Atlanta’s Zazie Beats and received rave reviews from The Hollywood Reporter. Justin Lowe of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Yan’s first film was “a dark, quirky comedy that peels back the layers of contemporary Mainland mores and reveals a group of people almost completely deracinated by their quest to get ahead in a society buffeted by rapidly shifting cultural expectations. Genially offbeat and broadly relatable, Dead Pigs presents the tantalizing potential to successfully appeal to both domestic and international audiences.”
Yan’s next project will definitely be her biggest, but if her first film is any indication of her skill she definitely is up to the challenge. Stay tuned for more updates about the film and Yan’s work as the film’s debut approaches.
