A relationship that never really got going before it got started has come to an end after only one season together. The Arizona Cardinals decided to fire head coach Steve Wilks after he only spent one season, less than a full calendar year, with the team
The team made an official statement on Monday morning.
The Steve Wilks era turned out to be one-and-done.
Ending weeks of speculation, the Cardinals announced they were firing the head coach Monday morning, less than 24 hours after the Cards closed out their 2018 season with a 27-24 loss to the Seahawks in Seattle.
“Any time something happens like that, you feel bad for a person,” defensive end Markus Golden said. “At the same time, he came in and went hard every day, so I respect him. I know he gave it his all. I know he can walk away with pride and say, ‘Hey, at least I came in hard every day and tried to do my job and tried to help this team win.’ So I respect coach Wilks. He brought his all every day.”
Said rookie running back Chase Edmonds, “Steve Wilks deserved better than we gave him this year.”
Wilks’ went 3-13 in his lone season in Arizona. His time with the Cardinals was less than stellar, to say the least. He led them to have the worst offense in football, a bottom five defense and no major standout player broke through this season. Larry Fitzgerald continued to show his age, David Johnson was hit or miss and rookie Josh Rosen went through a bunch of rookie mistakes as expected. The Cardinals will have the top pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
