All eyes will be on Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York as Deontay Wilder looks to bounce back against Robert Helenius. While Wilder is the main attraction, he is not the only former champion looking to make a comeback on Saturday night. In the co-main event, former super middleweight champion Caleb Plant hopes to bounce back after suffering the first loss of his pro career and take out Anthony Dirrell. As he embarks on his journey back to the top, Plant will have a few of his friends sitting ringside — D Smoke and Conway The Machine. During a recent appearance on Clobberin’ Time, the Tennessee native spoke openly about his friendship with both the Rhythm + Flow winner and the Griselda star.
“Now, I wanted to ask you because you’re kind of a Hip-Hop head, too. I was one of the people in the crowd [at your last fight]. I was D Smoke there. I saw Conway [the Machine] there. I was like, ‘Oh, Caleb [Plant] is a [Hip-Hop] head.’ Do you have anything planned for this entrance or are you kinda coming straight out?” Andreas Hale of Sporting News asked.
“I have something planned for this fight. I’m not going to speak on it just yet. Yeah, Conway, that’s my brother right there. I had him at the last fight. That’s someone that I stay in contact with and have a lot of respect for. I’m not sure if people know Conway’s story, but he’s a resilient man himself [with] everything that he’s been through and overcame. He’s gone on to be one of the greatest MCs of this generation and maybe many more. D Smoke, that’s one of my good friends as well. Both of them should be at this fight in full support as well,” Plant answered.
Not only does Caleb Plant have a great appreciation for Conway’s music, but he also has a few things in common with him as a person. Both Plant and Conway The Machine have suffered the heartbreak of losing a child and they both know all too well about what it’s like to be underestimated.
“That’s what I was going to lead to. A lot of people don’t know Conway’s story. For those who don’t know, Conway got shot and thought his rapping career was going to be over. Now, he’s standing on top of the game and is now one of the best in the business. How much have you guys talked about overcoming adversity? That seems like the common theme between you and Conway,” Hale said.
“Yeah, he was not just shot, but he was hit multiple times. He was hit in the back of the head. He suffers from Bell’s palsy. I had seen a story where he was talking about just looking at his face and he became teary-eyed. He was just wondering, ‘What the f*ck am I going to do?’ He was able to just use those emotions and he had nothing but time to just sit and work on his craft. I just have a lot of respect for him. We sit around and we spoke on it maybe a couple of times, but we don’t talk about it much. At some point, what’s understood doesn’t have to be explained. Hopefully, he doesn’t mind me speaking about this because he spoke about it publicly. He lost a child as well. I just have a lot of respect for the guy,” Plant commented.
Conway The Machine and D Smoke will be ringside as Caleb Plant looks to bounce back against Anthony Dirrell on October 15, 2022 at 9 p.m. on FOX pay-per-view in Brooklyn.
