Lopez spent last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 13 points per game. He was acquired from the Nets for D’Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov.
The bi-annual exception is a part of the collective bargaining agreement and allows teams to spend money that does not count against the salary cap (around $1.672 million over two years).
