
According to a Louisiana audit, the LSU Tigers accidentally overpaid Head Coach Brian Kelly by $1 million in 2022. With the error discovered the university has moved to correct the mistake. Kelly was in the first year of his ten-year deal worth $100 million dollars. The mistake occurred because of duplicate payments that totaled up to $1,001,368 to both Kelly’s LLC and directly to the coach. These duplicate payments began in May and ran until November when they were discovered. These payments were labeled as supplemental payments. Kelly left the Notre Dame Fighting Irish program to coach for the LSU Tigers last season.

The audit report also included the following line fixing the issue: “LSU management and the head football coach have enacted an adjusted payment schedule so the amount of overpayment will be recouped by the conclusion of fiscal year 2023.” The issue of the overpayment should be resolved by the end of 2023 according to the report.
Head Coach Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers exceeded expectations this season finishing with a 10-4 record. The season included an appearance in the 2022-23 SEC Championship Game and a 63-7 win over the Purdue Boilermakers in the 2022-23 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. With key returns and additions, the program is looking to compete for a National Championship this upcoming season.
