Gomez looked like he was going to be traded to the Mets last night but a deal fell through regarding his medical. Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores would have been headed to Milwaukee in the trade that fell through but it appears Milwaukee received a hefty set of prospects from Houston.
The Brewers will receive Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana, right-hander Adrian Houser and lefty Josh Hader in exchange for Gomez and Fiers. The Brew crew did very well in this trade receiving three of the top 15 prospects in Houston farm system, 2 of which are consensus top 100 guys in baseball according to MLB.com.
Phillips is the headliner ranking 2nd in the Astros system batting .320 with 15 homers in 2015 in high A ball and AA. Santana is another promising player who was apart of the Hunter Pence trade in 2012. Santana has strugled during his short major league career but has always torn the cover off the ball in AAA.
Houston has not been in the playoffs since 2005 and is really looking to end a long playoff drought. Having Scott Kazmir already on board Houston now becomes the favorites to win the AL West. The addition of Gomez instantly solidify s Houston’s outfield as they have struggled to find a center fielder since Dexter Fowler was send to the Cubs. Fiers is a bit of an unknown around the country but he has pitched very well with a 3.89 ERA on the year. Houston will also receive a competitive balance draft pick from Milwaukee easing the pressure of losing such talented prospects.
