In a battle between two sequels, ’22 Jump Street’ proved victorious.
The Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill comedy slayed ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ by pulling in $60 million over the weekend. This easily tops ’21 Jump Street’ and its $34 million haul back in 2012. The film also is a critical success, currently holding a 83% on RottenTomatoes.
‘How to Train Your Dragon 2‘ earns the runner up spot and debuts with an impressive $50 million gross. The film is Deamworks Animations best opening in two years even though it performed just under studio expectations of around $55 million. However, it beat out the $36 million haul of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ in 2010.
‘Maleficent’ is still enchanting audiences as the film gains another $19 million and secures a third place spot. This brings its domestic total up to $163.5 million.
The Tom Cruise action film ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ continues to suffer domestically at the box office. The movie earned another $16.2 million and brings its domestic total to $56.6 million. The film is holding its own internationally however with a total of $181 million.
Rounding out the top five is John Green’s teen drama ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ which dropped from the top spot last week. The film earned another $15.7 million and has a massive domestic total of $81.7 million. Its proving to be a huge financial success with a production budget of $12 million.
This week ‘Jersey Boys’ and ‘Think Like a Man Too’ hope to take down the boys of ’22 Jump Street’ when they hit theaters this weekend.
