Black Thought has set a release date for his upcoming memoir, The Upcycled Self. Set to be released on November 14, 2023, the book takes a closer look at the MC’s formative years and uses it as a way to examine who he has become today.
“Today Tariq Trotter—better known as Black Thought—is the platinum-selling, Grammy-winning co-founder of The Roots, and one of the most exhilaratingly skillful and profound rappers the culture has ever produced. But his story begins with a tragedy: as a child, Trotter burned down his family’s home. The years that followed are the story of a life snatched from the flames, forged in fire,” the book’s description reads.
“In The Upcycled Self, Trotter doesn’t just narrate a riveting and moving portrait of the artist as a young man, but gives readers a courageous model of what it means to live an examined life. In vivid vignettes, he tells the dramatic stories of the four powerful relationships that shaped him—community, friends, art, and family—each a complex weave of love, discovery, trauma, and loss.”
In addition to releasing a memoir, Black Thought is also preparing to perform at The Roots Picnic. As always, the festival will be co-headlined by The Roots with performances from Diddy and Lauryn Hill. Before the festival rolls around, check out the cover for Black Thought’s memoir below.

I’m so proud of this work. It’s been years in the making. A close look at my childhood…the era that made me.https://t.co/W5jw20CRbD
