According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Coming To America 2’ is finally moving forward. Paramount has tapped ‘Black-ish‘ creator Kenya Barris to rewrite the script as well as circling ’50/50’ helmer Jonathan Levine to direct the film. Eddie Murphy is expected to return to the sequel seeing as he’s been developing it for the better part of three decades. There’s no word yet on if the rest of the cast will return though one could assume if they are asked they’ll happily return for round 2.
‘Coming To America’ is widely considered one of the greatest comedies ever made. Making a sequel to a classic film way after the original was released has had a spotty record at best, and it’s even worse with comedy films. ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ and ‘Zoolander 2‘ are both recent examples of this concept going sideways. Though, none of the aforementioned films had Eddie Murphy. Murphy is one of the greatest stand-up comedians and comedic actors the world has ever seen. Though his career did take a dip in the 2000’s maybe returning to some of his best original material will reenergize the comedic legend. Murphy is also working on a fourth film in the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ franchise so we’ll find out in due time how these comedy sequels fair against the rest of the bunch.
Stay tuned for more ‘Coming To America 2’ news as it develops.
