President Joe Biden reportedly intends to ask Congress for a “one-and-done” aid package for Ukraine as it staves off an invasion of Russian forces. According to Tony Diver of The Telegraph, the package would be worth approximately $100 billion and would presumably last until the next presidential election in 2024.
“The idea about the ‘big package’ is firmly supported by many in the administration,” a source familiar with the proposed package told reporters.
The United States has offered Ukraine approximately $113 billion in support since February 2022. Last December, Congress approved the largest chunk of the $113 billion fund, a $43 billion package, but it is reportedly being depleted.
Biden’s reported push for a large aid package comes at an interesting time for Congress. Last week, Kevin McCarthy was removed as Speaker of the House by a hotly contested vote. It is unlikely that the Biden administration would push for an aid package of any kind until a new Speaker of the House is determined through an election process expected to begin next week.
In the meantime, Biden is reportedly working on a big speech regarding the ongoing conflict in Europe. The speech would attempt “to unite America as to why it is so important to support Ukraine, and how much is at stake”
