By now, you may have watched or even heard about Beyonce’s “Lemonade” special that aired on HBO this past weekend in support of her sixth studio album, LEMONADE. Backed by new records that have went on to become praised across plenty of platforms by critics, not to be forgotten is the visual that helped bring the records to life and offered a perspective of how those song could be interpreted. Now, as many of us have went on to digest and understand what Beyonce was trying to convey, Variety has learned that HBO has plans on submitting the special for the Emmys.
But the television drop makes it eligible for Emmy consideration, and HBO plans to submit “Lemonade” in the variety special category, Variety has learned.
Whether Kahlil Joseph and Beyoncé herself, the credited directors of the piece, can be joined by “additional directors” Melina Matsoukas, Todd Tourso, Dikayl Rimmasch, Jonas Akerlund and Mark Romanek remains to be seen. HBO is in the midst of working out those details.
Being nothing new to Queen Bey as she has previously seen other works go on to be nominated for an Emmy, another nomination and even a win would still be a big deal. As she’s slated to land a No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, along with kicking off the “Formation World Tour” tomorrow in Miami, Beyonce’s LEMONADE simply seems to be a win all across the board. Even better, she’s only getting started with what she has to bring in support of spreading the message of the brand new body of work.
