Netflix has set the stage for a star-studded affair with the film adaptation of the documentary, Virunga. Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk‘s Barry Jenkins will write the script and Leonardo DiCaprio will executive produce the film. A director has not been chosen for the film as of yet.
Netflix describes Virunga as a film of social and environmental importance.
“The film tells the story of those who worked to save one of the world’s most bio-diverse parks & the endangered gorillas inside,” Netflix writes.
This is just the latest of many projects Jenkins has tied his name to. Recently, he agreed to write the script for Flint Strong starring Ryan Destiny and The Underground Railroad series set at Amazon. In addition, he has signed on to direct a film chronicling the life of Alvin Ailey.
Netflix has not yet brought in a cast or announced a release date for the project. Stay tuned for more details as this project continues to develop.
