Zola originator A’Ziah King is seemingly going to war with A24, the production company responsible for bringing Zola to the big screen this year. While the film is nominated for several awards this year, King claims she was not invited or included in the “writers award category.”
“I think it’s [that] hilarious Zola is up for [seven] awards [and] no one thought to invite me nor include me [in] the writers award category. As if there would’ve been a film or a script to write, if I didn’t um…write it? [Zola has seven Film Independent Spirit Award nominations], the most of any film this year [and] any film A24 has ever made,” she tweeted.
“I think it’s hilarious [that] everyone else is on my television promoting & speaking on my experience as if it’s their moment [and] not a moment I created for us all. I think it’s hilarious my intellect, trauma [and] talent is being overshadowed [and hijacked]. I am the moment!”
King did clarify that she had experienced issues with A24, but was still on good terms with the cast and crew that powered the film.
“Let’s be clear. My beef is with A24 exclusively. [My beef is] not [with] the creators [or] the award shows. A24 is the OP [right now]. Nobody else,” she explained.
“I have been credited [and] I am very content with my EP credit! I am in awe of Janicza [and] Jeremy’s writing [and] directing. They deserve [credit] [and] have fought for me for years. However, not receiving [an] invite or even being thought of is the issue.”
Ultimately, it appears that King’s frustrations were heard by either the award show organizers or A24.
“The Shade Room post a tweet [and] suddenly, I have [two] tickets coming,” she added.
“I bet I do. I’ll see y’all there.”
