Entrepreneur Ayesha Curry has reportedly joined the board of the “One Million Black Women” initiative at Goldman Sachs. Launched in March, the initiative will allocate “$10 billion to advance racial equity and economic opportunity by investing in Black women.”
“This initiative is transformational,” Melanie Campbell of the “One Million Black Women” initiative said.
“What Goldman Sachs is doing has the potential to materially impact the lives of Black women, their families and communities across the country.”
During a recent interview with NBC‘s Alexi McCammond, Curry explained that she will focus her attention on the food industry. As a cookbook author and Food Network host, Curry is passionate about getting more Black women in positions of power within the food industry.
Studies have shown that Black workers make up 12.5% of all restaurant employees, but only 9.5% of all chefs. In comparison, a 2017 study from the National Restaurant Association found that Latinos made up 25% of all restaurant workers and 25% of chefs.
Through her work and activism, Curry has worked to improve this reality and she believes that she has found the best partner to make that happen. Unprecedent in the company’s history, the “One Million Black Women” initiative positions Goldman Sachs in a way that it has never been before.
“It’s something that I hadn’t seen before on such a large scale,”
Curry is not the only star to join the board of the initiative. She works alongside the likes of Issa Rae, Valeries Jarrett and Condoleeza Rice.
