HBO Max has ordered a pilot of the Ava DuVernay led series, DMZ. Inspired by the DC Comics property, the upcoming series focuses on the split between federal government and secessionist Free State groups. Specifically, the series will focus on a medic in what used to be Manhattan as she tries to keep citizens alive and look for her lost son.
DuVernay told Deadline, “DMZ is a special project to me as it marks a key collaboration with my company Array Filmworks, the excellent team at Warner Bros TV and the dynamo Roberto Patino.”
DuVernay added, “We’ve all worked diligently on this material, and I’ve witnessed Roberto in action.”
This is the second DC Comics project DuVernay has signed on to lead. Previously, DuVernay signed on to lead the New Gods project. Outside of DC Comics, DuVernay is also working on a Prince documentary, and a CBS drama called The Red Line.
Production for the DuVernay series will beg in early 2020. HBO Max will launch at the beginning of 2020 as well.
