On November 21, Atlanta City Council unanimously approved a $1 million settlement that will be distributed to the family of Rayshard Brooks.
“This grieving family has been through so much during this process. Although the children of Mr. Brooks have lost their father, settling the case will undoubtedly assist them with future plans as they come of age,” attorneys representing the family of Rayshard Brooks stated.
On June 12, 2020, authorities received a call regarding a man who had fallen asleep inside of his vehicle at a nearby Wendy’s. Shortly thereafter, Atlanta Police Department Officer Garrett Rolfe and Atlanta Police Department Officer Devin Brosnan arrived at the fast food restaurant and approached Rayshard Brooks. During the encounter, Rolfe and Brosnan say that Brooks failed a sobriety test and they attempted to take him into custody. As the officers attempted to arrest Brooks, he is accused of attempting to flee the scene. In response, the officers shot and ultimately killed Brooks.
“Rayshard Brooks is the latest high-profile casualty in the struggle for justice and the battle for the soul of America,” Senator Raphael Warnock said.
“This is about him, but this is much bigger than him.”
In August 2022, a specially appointed prosecutor opted not to pursue charges against Rolfe or Brosnan. Despite the decision of the appointed prosecutor, the Brooks family is hopeful that the Department of Justice will intervene in the matter.
“While we are disappointed that prosecutors didn’t pursue a criminal case against the officers involved in Mr. Brooks’ death, we continue to hold out hope that the Department of Justice will intervene in this matter,” attorneys representing the family of Rayshard Brooks added.
