The Atlanta Hawks were recently sold to Tony Ressler. Ressler, like all of the NBA, and Atlanta, knows that Philips Arena is a bad arena. One that doesn’t allow the loud Atlanta fans to be as energized as possible. He wants a new one.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has made it clear he is willing to invest in keeping the Hawks in Atlanta. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
Reed said he’s met once with the team’s new owners and repeated his willingness to consider a deal involving the use public funds. The mayor first indicated that option last year in the wake of controversy involving the team’s previous leadership.
“What I’m willing to do is come to the table with a plan that makes sense and is fair to the people of Atlanta,” Reed said. “I’m not closed to participating in a reasonable plan to make sure that the Hawks remain in the city and that’s what I expressed in our meeting.”
The consensus around the NBA is that the Hawks will stay in Atlanta. One of the NBA’s oldest franchises, Atlanta holds a lot of value for the NBA and the city of Atlanta. They are by far the best Professional sports team in Atlanta or Georgia in general. With the backing of Adam Silver and Tony Ressler, the Hawks won’t have to worry about anything until 2028.
