The Detroit Pistons are a very tall team. With new addition 7’3 Center Boban Marjanovic and 7’0 all-star Andre Drummond, their front-line seems imposing. The Serbian signed a 3-year, $21 million dollar offer sheet with the Pistons, after spending 1 year with the Spurs under Gregg Popovich’s guidance. With the salary cap rising, Boban took the opportunity to potentially get some real playing time with the Pistons, and show what he’s really got.
Andre Drummond seems to have already felt the presence of the Serbian big man. According to Perry Farrell of the Detroit Free Press, Drummond had a difficult time scoring on Boban in their first couple of pick up games. Per Farrell:
“We got a very, very, very large front line,” Drummond said laughing. “It’s always fun playing against Boban too. I was telling the guys after we were done playing our first pickup game that it might have been the first time I was really frustrated playing against somebody. It’s just so hard to score on him. He’s 7-3. He’s pretty agile as well, so if anything soft went in the air he was going to get it. If I wasn’t trying to dunk the ball, I wasn’t scoring.”
“It got to the point where I had to use my speed against him because I couldn’t back him down,” Drummond added. “I said I’ve got to take him out a couple of steps and try to beat him off the dribble. Other than that, Boban is a hell of a player. He’s going to be a huge addition for us and he’s definitely going to be a help for us during the season.”
“He’s better than what I thought.”
If Drummond is having that much trouble with Boban, it’s bound to better both of their games. With Boban, the 29-year old sophomore, and Drummond an all-star looking to lead his team to the Playoffs again, Head Coach Stan Van Gundy, has paired up two big men that are looking to prove something.
