Earlier this month, former super featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer made her debut in the lightweight division. Fresh off of her lone professional loss, Mayer easily outpointed her opponent, Lucy Wildheart. With the victory, the California native captures the interim WBC Lightweight Championship and becomes the mandatory challenger for the full title held by Katie Taylor.
“I do believe Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will have a rematch so if that happens I will challenge the winner of that. This is where I belong, big fights and world title fights,” Mayer said after the fight.
Taylor could opt to fight Mayer later this year, but it appears her calendar may be full for the remainder of 2023. The unbeaten champion is scheduled to fight fellow undisputed champion Chantelle Cameron this spring. Afterward, she is expected to fight Amanda Serrano for the second time.
If Mayer is unable to land a fight with either Serrano or Taylor, there is another opponent out there for her. As previously mentioned, Mayer suffered her lone professional defeat back in October at the hands of her bitter rival, Alycia Baumgardner. Baumgardner appears to be on the hunt for another opponent in the super featherweight division, but a rematch with Mayer at lightweight could prove to be financially enticing. Never missing an opportunity to take shots at her rival, Baumgardner caught a glimpse of one of her future potential opponents and offered a bit of commentary. However, it doesn’t appear that she was all too impressed with Mayer, calling her an “easy target.”
“Easy target,” Baumgardner tweeted.
“She not sitting in the paint [with] me, bro.”
Baumgardner went on to say that she would drop Mayer with her right hand. Unfortunately, there is no indication that fans may be able to see her back up her words in a rematch in the immediate future. Only time will tell when the Twitter back-and-forth will pause for a second fight in the ring.
