Two players who were at the top of the list of last generation’s NBA Stars, two guys were at the forefront of the NBA landscape from the mid-1990’s until the late 2000’s. Allen Iverson and Ray Allen, two players that will be known as players who had vastly different in skills, are both being honored.
Allen Iverson, who was known as a dangerous ball-handler who wasn’t afraid to play tough and get to the rim at any cost and Ray Allen, a 2-time NBA champion and the man who has made the most three-pointers in NBA history, will both be getting awards on the same night.
A source tells Def Pen Radio that both Iverson and Allen will be honored during the first annual NBPA ‘Players’ Awards’. Allen Iverson will be receiving an award for his career accomplishments on the court, the ‘Game Changer Award’. Ray Allen on the otherhand will be given an award for his off-court efforts, the ‘Man of the Year’ award. His work with communities and charities have been well documented, most notably with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and his ‘Ray of Hope’ foundation.
While the star of the NBPA Players’ Awards show will be James Harden after he’s awarded the MVP, as voted on by his fellow NBA players, its great to see the union of the NBA players looking back and honoring the guys the came before the current crop of stars.
A.I.’s recent documentary ‘IVERSON’ took the time to document some of the trials and tribulations the former MVP went through during and after his time in the NBA.
Allen was recently rumored to be possibly joining the Cleveland Cavaliers last season and has talked about coming back for one more season in 2015-16 but he’s yet to make a formal announcement of his next move in the NBA.
You can watch the NBPA Players Awards July 21st at 8PM on BET.
