It appears that the world will see Adrien Broner back in the ring this summer. According to Francisco A. Salazar of Boxing Scene, Broner will return for a July 23, 2022 bout in Chicago, Illinois. Despite reports that Broner may drop down to the super lightweight division, initial reports suggest that it will take place at welterweight and Omar Figueroa will be the opponent. If all goes according to plan, the fight will air on FOX by way of PBC.
Broner is one of the most entertaining personalities in boxing, but he has had trouble inside the ring lately. Since losing his first fight in December of 2013, Broner has put together a record of 7-3-1. However, each of his three losses have come against top level fighters like Mikey Garcia, Manny Pacquiao and Shawn Porter. Meanwhile, his victories have come against fighters like Ashley Theophane and Adrian Granados. His most recent contest was in February 2021 at the Mohegan Sun Casino. He beat Jovanie Santiago by unanimous decision.
Broner’s potential opponent, Omar Figueroa, is a former titleholder in the lightweight division. At 32 years old, the Texas native holds a record of 28-2. However, his two losses have come in his last two bouts. Yordenis Ugas beat Omar Figueroa by unanimous decision in 2019 and Abel Ramos stopped Figueroa two years later.
