At 32 years old, Adrien Broner has managed to captured multiple world championships in four different weight classes. Still, his place in this generation of fighters remains unclear. When confronted with his toughest opposition, Broner has fallen short of victory. Over the years, he’s suffered lopsided decision losses against Manny Pacquiao, Shawn Porter and Marcos Maidana. Despite these setbacks, Broner believes that he has what it takes in order to get back to the top.
The first step in Broner’s return took place in February 2021. After a two-year layoff, the Ohio native earned a decision victory against Jovanie Santiago. Now, he’ll turn his attention toward Omar Figueroa Jr.
“I’m going in there to try to stop Figueroa,” Broner told Bad Left Hook.
“I’m going to take the fight to him and go ahead and get him out of there. What I expect from him is the same gruesome Figueroa that we always see. He’ll try to make it a rough fight. Every fighter is different, but I don’t think he’ll be hard to hit.’’
Much like Broner, Figueroa has suffered defeats in his biggest fights. He lost by unanimous decision against Yordenis Ugas in 2019. In 2021, he suffered a stoppage loss against Abel Ramos. However, he still believes he has what it takes to reach the mountaintop.
“I’m excited to move on to the next phase of my life and career, especially now that my mental health is at the forefront of everything I do,” Figueroa told Bad Left Hook.
“Having a clear mind has been the best thing to happen to me. Now I’m able to focus 100 percent on my boxing career and I can’t wait to be back in the ring.”
Broner and Figueroa will go to war on August 20, 2022 in Hollywood, Florida on Showtime.
