Addison Russell has been suspended 40 games by the MLB following the league’s investigation into allegations that he abused his ex-wife, Melisa Reidy-Russell. On Wednesday afternoon Major League Baseball announced the Chicago Cubs shortstop would be suspended in a statement released by the commissioner’s office. The suspension is retroactive to September 21st of this year.

The original allegations against Russell, 24, date back to last June when a friend of Reidy-Russell posted on social media that Reidy-Russell was being abused by Russell. Russell vehemently denied any allegations at the time. But about two weeks ago a blog written by Reidy-Russell described years of physical and emotional abuse she says she experienced while married to Russell. The MLB responded to the blog post by placing Russell on administrative leave and stating they had been investigating the allegations for the past 15 months.
Last week, Reidy-Russell told reporters that after initially declining to cooperate she has decided to change her mind and work with the MLB’s investigation.
The Cubs season came to a close early Wednesday morning after an extra-innings Wild Card loss to the Colorado Rockies.
