9 Rules for Wearing a Watch You Should Know

  • August 21, 2020

Leather shoes don’t go with pajamas, baseball caps don’t go with a suit, ties don’t go with shorts, these are the obvious rules of fashion. When it comes to watches, the rules may be less well known but they are just as vital. Wearing the wrong watch for your outfit or for the event can be detrimental to your appearance. There are also certain faux-pas that it is important to know when it comes to wearing a watch in order to avoid giving offense.
Whether you are going to a formal event or a barbeque, here are the 9 rules you should know while sporting a timepiece.

1. Match your Watch with your Outfit

Wear a sports watch to a business meeting is a total blunder that makes you look unprofessional. You should always wear an outfit that is appropriate for the event, equally in your attire and your watch. Pair your digital watch with your casual or athletic clothing. Analog watches are a bit more tricky as there are five main types of analogue watches: dress, dive, racing, pilot and field. For a black tie event, pair your formal wear with a luxury watch like the ones you’ll find on Chronoexpert. You don’t want to let down your stunning suit or formal dress with a casual timepiece.

2. Co-ordinate the Colors

You wouldn’t wear a black leather belt with brown shoes, would you? Follow the same rule with your watches as well. You should match your shoes with the color of the band of your watch. For this reason, interchangeable watch bands are a useful feature. Similarly, maintain the color tone throughout the outfit. Pair cool colors like black, grey, silver and blue shades together. Coordinate warm colors like gold with browns, tans and other earthly tones.

3. Disregard the Left Hand Rule

There used to be a firm rule that everyone should wear their watch on the left wrist. However, this is an outdated rule that doesn’t acknowledge that many people are left-hand. Instead, you should always wear your watch on your non-dominant hand to protect from damage as you use your hand. So if you are left handed, you should wear your watch on your right wrist.

4. Consider the Size

The oversized watches are all the rage these days, we see numerous celebrities flaunting a timepiece handing down their wrists. It is admirable for a casual event, even so, what about a formal one? The fit plays a critical role in the neatness of your outfit. If you have a small wrist, avoid the thick dials, likewise, larger wrists can incorporate thick dials to their outfits. The bandwidth of your watch should be half of the diameter of your case. People with smaller wrists should look beyond the metal bands as it would look oversize.

5.  Wear an Appropriate Watch for the Occasion

If it’s a day event, consider wearing light-colored dial like white or cream. In the same way, if you go to an evening event, go with a dark-colored dial like black, grey or brown. Also, glow in the dark watches should be avoided at night events as it can become distracting in dim light.

6. Go for a Tight Fit

A loosely fitted watch can look sloppy and messy. You want to make sure to fit your watch according to the size of your wrist. Your watch band should fit snugly to your wrist. The general rule is that your watch should not be able to slide more than two inches down your wrist.

7. Know when to Check your Watch

Checking your phone in front of others is considered rude, the same goes for checking your watch. It doesn’t matter how expensive or intricate your timepiece is, it’s always rude to check your watch in a conversation because it implies that you are bored or looking for a way out from the situation.

8. Avoid too much Sparkle

This rule depends on the situation. With a traditional outfit, wearing a watch with bling will look distracting. However, this depends on the event and also your individual personality. Ultimately, this is about personal preference!

9. Go for a Collection

You don’t wear the same shoes every day so why wear the same watch every day of the week? Even if you own a stunning watch, the chances are that it won’t match with all the outfits in your wardrobe. Regardless of your budget, start adding one piece at a time to your collection which will suit every occasion. It would also give your favorite timepiece a break and make it last longer.

For best results, try matching the outfit with your skin tones as well. Our skin tones are warm and cool-toned too. Follow these rules in order to avoid a fashion blunder next time. Whether it’s a G-shock or a Rolex, a watch is more than an accessory, it reflects your personality.
