Mitchell left in the first half of the 49ers’ season opener 19-10 loss against the Chicago Bears and he recorded 41 rushing yards in six carries. The team ruled him out for the rest of the game within minutes and he was seen wearing a brace on his knee after the game.
Jeff Wilson Jr finished the game as the team’s lead running back and will be the starter going forward as Mitchell recovers.
Deebo Samuel also emerges as a sporadic option for some plays just like he was last season. On Sunday, he rushed for 52 yards in eight carries and scored the only touchdown for the 49ers.
The 49ers also have Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price on the roster at running back.
Last season, Mitchell also dealt with some injuries that limited him to only 11 games in his rookie season. He rushed for 963 yards and scored 5 touchdowns.
