The San Francisco 49ers were one of the worst NFL teams in 2015 under the train wreck that was Jim Tomsula. 2016 brought in a new regime under Chip Kelly that so far hasn’t seen a lot of activity in the offseason. With uncertainties at basically every position where will the 49ers look to improve on draft day?
The 49ers hold the 7th pick in the draft but there is a huge question mark surrounding the quarterback position. The quarterback battle of Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert is a known commodity but there is a chance someone will be drafted to enter the mix. Look no further than Paxton Lynch from Memphis who could be an excellent fit in Chip Kelly’s offense. Lynch could go anywhere from 7th overall to the 2nd round on draft day. If the 9ers do not select a quarterback with the 7th pick they may trade back into the first round to go get one allowing them an extra 5th year option.
Outside of the quarterback position this is a roster that has holes at virtually every position. This would prompt them to take the best player available. Guessing off of Trent Baalke’s recent track record I would guess this will be the landing spot for DeForest Buckner from Oregon. Buckner could be the next Calias Campbell at 6’7″. My question is how dominant would he have been if he didn’t play in a pass happy quarterback league like the Pac 12? Buckner in my eyes is more of a 2nd or 3rd round guy to me.
