The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has added 395 new members this quarter. This time around, there are a number of high-profile musicians like H.E.R, Andra Day and Janet Jackson that have joined the organizations. In addition, actors like Robert Pattinson, Issa Rae and Leslie Odom Jr. have also joined the Academy. Not to mention, behind-the-scenes figures like Kenya Barris, Byron Allen, Kemp Powers, Travon Free and Shaka King are new Academy members.
“To enable steady future growth and to ensure the necessary infrastructure, staff resources and environment to support all Academy members, the number invited to membership was limited to roughly half that of recent years,” the Academy stated.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has looked to diversify its makeup in recent years. Forty-six percent of the class is made up of women and 39% of the class is made up of people of color. Also, this year’s class is made up of members that come from 49 different countries.
