The Hollywood Foreign Press Association had some REAL hot takes to start the week when they announced this year’s Golden Globes nominees on Monday morning. By far the hottest story surrounding this year’s ceremony though is Netflix’s dominance. The granddaddy of all streaming app leads the way this year with 17 total nominations. HBO isn’t far behind with 15 nominations while Hulu and Amazon sit tied for a distant third with just 5 apiece. Netflix also leads the way with nominations by a single film or series as Marriage Story has 6 total. The Irishman and Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood are tied for second with five total each.
Beyond the dominance of streaming platforms at this year’s ceremony, the nominees also give us key insight into what to expect from the Oscars. Joaquin Phoenix is likely still the favorite to take home both the Globe and the Oscar for best actor. However, the field of actors he’ll be competing against doesn’t make the category seem like the cakewalk that it did back in October. He’ll be going up against the likes of Christian Bale, Antonio Banderas, Adam Driver, and Jonathan Pryce. Speaking of stacked categories though, check out the other actor and actress categories this year, they’re all a murder’s row of incredible performers going head-to-head.
But, as with every year, there are some snubs. However, this year there are some pretty egregious omissions. Notably, no female directors or female-directed films were nominated for best director or best film, despite those film’s recognition in other categories. To be fair, allowing only five films/directors in each category makes it tough to represent every great film. However, it’s a pretty glaring mark against this year’s ceremony. And speaking of glaring, though there are probably at least a dozen shows that can make some realistic claim to being snub, the fact that When They See Us was summarily ignored by the HFPA is a travesty.
Outside of just the nominees announced today, the 77th Annual Golden Globes is set to be one of the most interesting in years. Ricky Gervais is, surprisingly, making his grand return as the event’s host for a record fifth time. Also, Elle DeGeneres is slated to be honored as the second-ever recipient of the Carol Burnett Award for her incredible career and exceptional work on the small screen.
