COWABUNGA!
‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ held the top spot of the box officie for the second week with a $28.4 million haul. It is a 57% drop from its debut week but is typical with summer blockbusters. This brings its 10-day total to $117.6 million. FUN FACT: That could buy 23.4 million Little Caesars Hot & Ready Pizzas.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ also held strong in its third week falling just short of ‘Turtles’ with $24.7 million. It passed the $200 million mark domestically and the $400 million mark internationally. ‘Guardians’ has surpassed the entire box office totals for ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, ‘Thor’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and ‘The Incredible Hulk’. Not bad for a lesser known property.
Third place sees the first new comer of the week as ‘Let’s Be Cops’ earned $17.7 million over the weekend and $26.1 million over its five day release. The movie is already turning a profit as it took $17 million to produce. I smell a sequel!
‘The Expendables 3’ took a hit at the box office in its opening week due to a rare pre-release leak. The film took in $16.2 million and is dismal compared to its $100 million price tag. Last month it was reported that a DVD quality copy of the movie hit the web. As of Aug 1, Lionsgate has said the film had been downloaded more than 2.2 million times. This is the lowest opening of the franchise. The first ‘Expendables’ film opened to $34.8 million in 2010 with the sequel earning $28.6 million in 2012.
Rounding out the top five is the final new release of the week ‘The Giver’ with $12.8 million. This fell below studio expectations as the book is a best selling novel.
Can the Turtles hold on for another week? Or will the dark crime lords of ‘Sin City’ take over when they storm theaters Thursday night.
