Chuck fans, I’ve got good and bad news. The good news is, Zachary Levi is returning to the spy-comedy genre. The bad news is, it’s not for the long-rumored Chuck movie. According to Deadline, Levi has signed on to star in Spy Guys, a spy-comedy from the Lonely Island team.
In the film, Levi is getting an upgrade from the lovable Nerd-Herder he’s used to playing. The film’s logline (per Deadline) reveals that “Levi will play a super spy in the vein of Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt who gets in a jam on an impossible mission and can only rely on the help of his moronic college friends who happen to be with him to work it out.”
Levi’s on-screen college friends will be played by the Lonely Island crew, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. The three SNL alums are also serving as producers on the film alongside John Rickard. Jeff Tomsic is directing off a script written by Adam Sztykiel.
Levi has been having a big year so far. He starred in this year’s Shazam!, DC’s first real HIT since The Dark Knight Rises. (I know Wonder Woman was well-received but it carried too much Batman v Superman baggage to shine as it should have.) Then, he was also tapped to host last week’s MTV Movie and TV Awards. So, hopefully, if his star keeps rising we’ll actually get that Chuck movie one day.
