Former Indiana Hoosiers star Yogi Ferrell went undrafted in 2017. He signed a deal with the Brooklyn Nets, but was waived after just 15 games. Ferrell was picked up by the Dallas Mavericks, where he has shined. Ferrell doesn’t sound bitter about the Nets not believing in him; what happened happened, and he’s happy in Dallas. From Dwain Price of the Star-Telegram:
“You only need one team to fall in love with you,’’ Ferrell said. “So Brooklyn didn’t like me, so they got rid of me, I came to Dallas and they love me.
“I’m glad it worked out here, and it’s not always going to work out maybe the first or second time, but at times it’ll work out.’’
Ferrell faced the Nets for the first time Friday and the Mavs won 105-96 behind a 13-1 fourth-quarter run. Ferrell was hoping for a big game against his former team, saying:
“A triple-double, yeah, that would be nice,’’ Ferrell said. “A double-double would be even nice, too.
“I’ve still got to get one of those. I’ve been close a couple of times. But you never know, it could be tonight.’’
Ferrell did not record a double-double or a triple-double. He tallied 17 points on 5-12 shooting (including 3-5 from deep) to go with two assists and two rebounds.
Rookie Isaiah Whitehead led the Nets with 24 points on 8-12 shooting, but it wasn’t enough to take down Ferrell and the Mavs.
Since joining the Mavs, Ferrell has averaged 12.7 points and 4.7 assists per game while shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from three-point range.
