When the New York Mets acquired Cuban slugger Yoenis Cespedes at the trade deadline from the Detroit Tigers, the team was hoping to bring it a big bat to solidify their often underwhelming offense.
Last night in Denver, Cespedes delivered on that dream and then some in the Mets 13-9 win over the Colorado Rockies.
Yoenis cranked three homeruns off Rockies pitching last night including a second inning grand slam that broke the game open. Actually, Cespedes became the first MLB player with at least 5 hits, 3 blasts, 7 RBIs, 5 runs and a stolen base in one game.
After the game, Yoenis called his performance ‘special’ and Mets manager Terry Collins said the following after the contest, courtesy of MLB.com.
“I haven’t seen anything like that,” manager Terry Collins said. “He just continues to display some of the things that everybody says he can do. When you see it, you just shake your head because he’s a special talent.”
“Now,” Collins added, “you just can’t wait to see what he’s going to do tomorrow.”
