Rayshawn “YFN Lucci” Benett has been charged in a wide-ranging indictment handed down in Atlanta, Georgia. The 105-count indictment is the result of a six-month investigation organized by officials across Fulton County.
“We are serious about the violence in Atlanta,” Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Charles Hampton told FOX 5 in Atlanta.
“We are serious about holding people accountable.”
Twelve people were accused of engaging in gang-related activities and performing actions to strengthen the gang’s reputation. As it pertains to YFN Lucci, the indictment argues that one of the gang’s subgroups was “centered around” him. Ultimately, he was hit with felony murder, aggravated assault, firearm and racketeering charges. His lawyer, Drew Findling, has denied all charges levied against his client.
“He’s not guilty of any crime that’s referenced in the previous charge and now in this indictment,” he explained to FOX 5.
“He’s absolutely not a gang member, and this indictment — neglectfully or purposely — fails to say that Mr. Bennett is a nationally and internationally recognized musical artist.”
Throughout the indictment, YFN Lucci’s social media posts and song lyrics are used against him. This is not a new tactic used by law enforcement. In recent weeks, AR-Ab was sentenced to more than three dozen years in prison after his lyrics were used to his detriment in the court of law.
“To sit and analyze somebody’s social media account and to try to somehow find some evidence of a crime is ridiculous when people are just really expressing themselves through social media,” Findling argued.
