In 2018, Aparicio broke on to the scene with her portrayal of Cleo in the Netflix film, Roma. Originally billed as a small Netflix film, her performance in the film ultimately broke out to earn her recognition from Time, The New York Times, Gotham Awards and more. This week, Aparicio may have earned her greatest honor of all.
Yalitza Aparicio has been nominated in the category of best actress at the 2019 Academy Awards. By doing so, Aparicio has become the second Mexican woman to be nominated in the category. Furthermore, she has become the first indigenous Mexican woman to ever be nominated in this category.
In addition to her nomination, Roma has earned a bevy of nominations. The Netflix film has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay and much more. In total, the film earned ten nominations.
