Toure’ Murry was given an opportunity to prove himself when he was signed to a second 10-day contract with the Wizards, but he unfortunately was injured just a day after officially signing the contract. With Bradley Beal also being injured, the Wizards were forced to release Murry, and had to sign Will Bynum to be able to have depth at the guard positions.
The Wizards had been waiting for Bynum to fully recover from injury before signing him, but the Wizards really had no choice once Beal and Murry both went down. They do need depth at the guard position to bring in when John Wall, and whoever start at shooting guard get tired.
In his previous six seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Bynum averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 assists per game. Bynum was a guard capable of starting, and coming off the bench in his seven-year NBA career. The Wizards are going to need this kind of production, at least until Bradley Beal comes back, or if they plan on making a playoff run.
Although this move was bound to happen eventually, it was not going to happen until Murry’s 10-day deal ran out. The Wizards had to act fast and ensure they would have enough serviceable guards to help them win basketball games. Bynum is far more talented than Murry, so Wizards fans should see a lot more minutes from Bynum than they had been seeing with Murry. This plan is going to need to work out for the Wizards if they are going to have any chance to win a playoff series, or even a single playoff game.
