Tuesday, the Wizards will once again place their main focus on guards for the pre-draft workouts being held at Verizon Center. It will be the second consecutive day where the Wizards will hold a workout for four guards and two centers.
The players being observed include Temple guard Will Cummings, Delaware State guard Amere May, William & Mary guard Marcus Thornton, Vipers (D_League)/Delaware guard Jarvis Threatt, Utah center Dallin Bachynski, and UNC Asheville center Jaleel Roberts.
It’s still kinds of confusing as to why the Wizards have chosen to focus on guards, but they must be looking for somebody they can develop and store to be John Wall’s backup. Since Ramon Sessions is entering a contract year, they have to be looking towards the future if he chooses to leave after a potential breakout season.
Former Utah Center Dallin Bachynski is the player to watch here from the size, effort, and intensity he brings to the game. At 7-feet tall, 247 pounds, Bachynski has the size to be an NBA player, but is still lacking the skill needed. He comes from a winning program at Utah where they made it all the way to the South Regional Semifinal game before losing to eventual NCAA champion Duke.
Bachynski will likely miss out on being drafted, but could be a snag for anybody with extra space on the roster once teams can sign undrafted free-agents. With his size, he has to be a player any team, especially the Wizards, will try to stash and develop into a player who will eventually be impactful.
Don’t expect the Wizards to go after one of these players in the draft, but instead look for them to be pretty busy after the draft has been completed. Washington could find some younger bench production with free-agents, and seem to be preparing themselves for an interesting offseason.
