Will Barton has decided not to sign an extension with the Denver Nuggets, ESPN’s Chris Haynes reported on Sunday. He will test free agency in the summer of 2018.
Denver Nuggets swingman Will Barton will not agree to a contract extension this offseason and will test unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2018, league sources tell ESPN.
Sources say the Nuggets anticipated Barton’s decision, made in an attempt to maximize his earning potential during the prime of his career.
Barton will enter the final season of his three-year, $11 million contract with the team in the fall. One of the premier sixth men in the league, he’s due for a significant raise next summer in free agency.
Barton averaged 13.7 points per game this season on a career-high shooting from the field (44 percent) and three-point line (37 percent). He’ll garner some interest from a few teams on the open market next summer if he continues to raise his averages.
Barton, who turned 26 in January, has played five seasons in the NBA. He was drafted by Portland with the No. 40 pick in 2012.
