A What We Do in the Shadows series has been ordered by FX. The 10-episode run is based on the 2014 film of the same name. The series was co-created by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who wrote, directed, and starred in the film. The series is set to premiere in early 2019.
It will follow three vampires in New York City who have been roommates for hundreds of years. Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasha Demetriou, and Harvey Guillen are attached to star.
Nick Grad, FX’s co-president of original programming, commented on the series pickup.
“What We Do in the Shadows only gets better with age thanks to this brilliant adaptation for television by co-creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Their feature version was a hilarious, fresh take on the mundanity of everyday life that even immortals must face. We are thankful to them, Paul Simms and Scott Rudin, and this amazing cast for taking us deeper into the shadows with this series.”
Waititi and Clement are onboard to executive produce alongside Simms, Rudin, Eli Bush, and Garrett Basch.
Other What We Do in the Shadows-based properties are on the way from Clement and Waititi. The duo is also developing a sequel film based on the group of werewolves from the original film. They are also working on a spinoff television series that follows the two cops Karen and Mike who played a small role in the film.
Waititi has seen major success recently as he directed Thor’s $850 million outing in Thor: Ragnarok. Clement can be seen on another FX property, Legion, and was on the HBO series Divorce.
