It is clear that with all these $50+ Million deals, people are already wondering whether it’s too much? Is the NBA universally becoming the New York Yankees back in the day? Giving 15 PPG players $20 Million like it’s bubblegum. You would never see that, hell even two years ago. But next year it’ll be the norm, you may not agree but I’ve been seeing sports stars getting $100K a week for years now. Get used to it.
One key case that got an anonymous GM’s goat was the Dallas Mavericks’ Deal for Wesley Matthews.
“A healthy Wesley Matthews at $70 million is insane,” one GM said. “But Wesley Matthews coming off Achilles’ surgery at $70 million? What’s a stronger way to say insane?”
And the fun doesn’t stop there. Not by a longshot.
DeMarre Carroll got four years and $60 million to leave Atlanta for Toronto, and former Boston College star Reggie Jackson got five years and $80 million to stay with the Pistons.
“There’s no question, the norm is not the norm anymore,” agent Mark Bartelstein told Howard Beck of Bleacher Report. “Everything is going to change.”
You see those numbers and you got to double take sometimes. And then you have to go ‘Reggie Jackson? 80 Million? Really?!’
But this’ll be the norm now. There is more money than good players. And I’ll tell you this. If you’re like me and are not a fan of the One & Done, it’s not going to go anytime soon.
