Yet another drug-related suspension prior to the season even starting. Wes Welker is suspended 4 games for violating the league’s Performance Enhancing Drug policy. Welker, who tested positive for amphetimines insisted in his email to the Denver Post that he did so unknowingly:
I’m as shocked as everyone at today’s news. I want to make one thing abundantly clear: I would NEVER knowingly take a substance to gain a competitive advantage in any way. I have never been concerned with the leagues performance enhancing or drug abuse policies because under no scenario would they ever apply to me, but I now know, that (drug-policy procedures) are clearly flawed, and I will do everything in my power to ensure they are corrected, so other individuals and teams aren’t negatively affected so rashly like this.”
While Wes Welker is the league’s best receiver in terms of touchdowns and yards (48 and 9,358) his recent concussion concerns have led many to believe that this suspension is a blessing in disguise. With 4 games off, Welker’s brain has more time to heal after 3 concussions in less than 10 months.
