Tony Gonzalez holds virtually every record known to the tight end position but was he planning on returning to the NFL? Reportedly at least two teams have tried to lure him out of retirement in 2014. Gonzalez kept those teams anonymous. After a long 17 year career with Atlanta and Kansas City it appears Gonzalez is done for good. He responded to the media in this way when asked about returning to the field.
“If there was a team out there in need of a tight end, they better go somewhere else because I’m about 230 pounds now,” Gonzalez said, via the Kansas City Star. “I’m afraid I’d get crushed out there on the football field. I enjoyed 17 years, had a great time, but I’m very happy where I’m at right now.”
While Gonzalez may enjoy his new job with CBS Sports he joked about possibly returning for a chance to win a ring.
“If I could be like the third-string tight end, and I don’t have to get in the game, and I can get a ring, yeah,” he said.
Then again if Rob Gronkowski goes down this weekend it never hurts to give the 38 year old a call. Gonzalez trails only the G.O.A.T. Jerry Rice on the all time receptions list.
