The Golden State Warriors have just under $79 million committed to nine players next season. Surely they will most likely try to resign Draymond Green and excercise Marreese Speights’ team option which would put them over the $80.7 million luxury tax line.
That seems to not be no problem with Warriors owner Joe Lacob as the Warriors owner recently stated that he has no problem having to pay the luxury tax so he can keep his team’s current core together.
“I don’t think we have any other choice,” Lacob said. “Numbers would dictate, anyone can look at them, that we’re very likely in the luxury tax and very likely very substantially, next year. And you know what? We’re OK with that. I tell Bob (Myers, Warriors GM) all the time. He keeps asking me, ‘Are you sure?’ We’re prepared to do whatever it takes to win a championship; I’ve said that before.”
Lacob also had praise for Draymond Green, who will be a free agent after this season.
“Draymond Green! I’m not allowed per NBA rules as you know to make certain statements about who we’re going sign or how hard we’re going to try to sign that person,” Lacob said. “What I will say is, he was born to be a Warrior. And we love him. I certainly think today as we look at our team, he’s part of our core and can’t imagine it being otherwise.”
Technically Lacob can talk about resigning Green, unless he wants to file tampering charges on himself, which would honestly be pretty cool to witness.
Warriors fans are probably pretty happy to hear that their owner is committed to winning, and are most likely big fans of him now. The same couldn’t be said a few years ago, when Golden State fans let their owner know how they felt about him during Chris Mullin’s jersey retirement ceremony.
