Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob hopes to retain former NBA superstar Jerry West in his current role on the team’s executive board past this season; West’s contract expires this summer. From Tim Kawakami of The Mercury News:
-Q: Is there an update on Jerry West’s status with the team beyond this summer?
-LACOB: We’re really embroiled in the Finals now. I think we all want to focus on that, including Jerry.
His contract is up, as you know. We have met; we have discussed the future. And it’s really something that I’m sure at the end of the season we will return to and figure out what Jerry wants to do.
We want him back. We love him. He’s been a great contributor to the organization, someone I consider a personal friend as well. We would love him back (beyond this season), and we’ve made that known.
According to Kawakami, Lacob suggested that the decision is up to West, but the Warriors want him back.
West had an illustrious NBA career. He played 14 seasons and was an All-Star every year that he played.
West served as general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1980s through early 2000s, and the Lakers won five championships under his management. West also served as GM of the Memphis Grizzlies from 2004 to 2007. He won two Executive of the Year awards – one with the Lakers (1995) and one with the Grizzlies (2004).
