Former New York Knick and Knicks color commentator Walt Frazier is known for stylish and crazy suits or his crazy rhyming as well. Wednesday nights telecast of The Knicks vs. Pacers game took an unexpected turn when Frazier gave us an awkward comment about referee Lauren Holtkamp.
The commentary clearly isn’t basketball related and Breen quickly realizes the situation and shoots down the comment Frazier made. Lauren Holtkamp is infamous for Chris Paul commenting “This might not be for her.”. Now Frazier’s comment surround the third female referee The NBA has ever had, but I don’t find the comments derogatory (the comments could have been a lot worse.).
Frazier certainly walked a fine line which could have been crossed very easily, but Mike Breen stepped in and cut any further comments to be made.
Holtkamp has been a referee for 11 years before joining The NBA this season, and I think if it’s a referee that isn’t involved with another big news story this might not even be an issue. Since it is in fact Holtkamp it is a big story.
Frazier simply is complimenting Holtkamp even if we do know what he is hinting at here. Frazier will receive some sort of punishment I’d assume Frazier’s comments a bit out of line yes. Did they cross the line? No.
The big question here is when can Holtkamp just go back to doing her job of being an NBA referee which is obviously a big accomplishment for being one out of three NBA female referees ever!
We should have an interesting day of debate of who is right and who is wrong in this situation, but hopefully the dust will settle because Walt meant no harm in his comments I think he was simply trying to be the comic relief of the broadcast like he usually is.
Walt’s comments certainly make you raise your eyebrows and cringe at what is coming next, but thankfully the line was not crossed.
See what happens when The Knicks product on the court isn’t as exciting as the extra curricular activities going on?
