Just when you thought the Sacramento Kings were turning a corner, something new happens. Recently, Rudy Gay took to the media to voice his frustrations about Kings management. Notably, he spoke about the lack of communication regarding reported trade talks. Gay’s comments obviously made national news and well here we go again.
Kings general manager Vlade Divac was asked about the comments while at the Team USA exhibition game. After initially playing coy and saying he did not know about the comments, Divac laid down this quote (via James Ham of CSN Bay Area):
“He has my number,” Divac told CSN California. “If I do something, I will call him. Obviously, if I didn’t call him, we didn’t do anything.”
Oh well there’s what Rudy Gay was talking about.
Divac seems to only want to tell his players when they are actually traded. That might be a savvy move considering there’s a chance whatever trade he is discussing doesn’t go down. Divac also does make the right point in saying that Gay should be talking to him rather than the media.
That said, even if Divac isn’t the one telling the players they’re being shopped, they can very much still find out. By not discussing it with that player, the Kings run the risk of not only alienating Gay, but players around the league as well.
But hey at least they have his number.
