Over the past few seasons, the Sacramento Kings have made some questionable moves, to say the least. Now, we won’t bore you with some of the notable players and coaches that have made their way through Sacramento but instead focus on the man that’s brought them there. The man in question is Vivek Ranadive majority owner of the Sacramento Kings.
When we think of the Kings notable moves, the president of basketball operations and general manager Vlade Divac almost always gets brought up and with good reason. However, Divac is, for lack of a better term, a figurehead and a scapegoat at the positions he holds due to the Ranadive effect.
Following from Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN.
“You would think that after making an ass of yourself, whether it’s 4-on-5 or one bad hire after another, that you’d become more collaborative and seek out help,” says a well-placed source. “Vivek has done just the opposite. Instead of putting together a brain trust, he’s his own brain trust — he and whoever the last person he talked to is.”
When we think of some of the great organizations, the owner is almost always never in the picture when it comes to roster moves. Unfortunately, the Kings are the exact opposite of that narrative, Ranadive has full control of final roster moves.
His constant involvement has led to a dysfunctional basketball organization and environment in Sacramento. It will be interesting to see if Ranadive makes more roster moves moving forward to propel the Kings into the playoff picture in the West. Until then, Ranadive is who he is and hopefully will learn from his mistakes and improve the Kings in the near future.
